Beekeeper Studio Community is a GPLv3 desktop client for MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite, SQL Server, and several other engines. Paid Indie, Professional, and Business plans unlock import/export, a JSON sidebar, ER diagrams, and extra databases. You look at a dedicated MySQL GUI when your week is port 3306, SQL dumps, indexes, and users, and you do not want those jobs gated behind a license key.
License, editions, and what Community keeps free
Beekeeper ships one installer. Community features stay on. Paid features turn on with a license in the same app. Community is GPLv3. The vendor asks organizations with 10 or more employees, or more than $1 million in annual revenue, to buy a paid license even if they only use Community.
Community includes unlimited connections and tabs, a SQL editor with autocomplete, an editable table grid, and schema edits for tables, indexes, relations, and triggers. SSH tunnels and SSL are free. Sockets work only when MySQL runs on the same machine. SSH needs TCP (host plus port), not a Unix socket.
Paid rows hit daily MySQL work. JSON row view, editing cells in a query result, multi-table export, CSV-to-table import, native backup/restore, and ER diagrams sit on paid tiers. Community can still copy a result and export a single table. It does not give you a free dump wizard for a whole schema.
TabulaSQL is MIT and has no paid tier. SQL dump import, CSV/JSON/SQL export, clipboard CSV/TSV/JSON import, ER diagrams, a visual EXPLAIN tree, and the MySQL/MariaDB user manager ship in the same build. Optional AI text-to-SQL uses a key you bring. Beekeeper Community is $0. Indie is listed at $9 per user per month on the yearly plan. TabulaSQL is $0 for every feature on /features.
Engines: many protocols versus MySQL depth
Beekeeper Community talks to MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite, SQL Server, Amazon Redshift, TiDB, Google BigQuery, Redis, and more. Oracle, Cassandra, and ClickHouse are paid. A SQL Server replica on port 1433 next to MariaDB is the one-window case.
TabulaSQL ships three drivers: MySQL/MariaDB on the MySQL protocol (default port 3306), PostgreSQL on 5432, and a local SQLite file. Connect, browse, query, edit, Explain, and ER diagrams work on all four. Index manager, foreign keys, routines, copy wizard, and user manager are deepest on MySQL 5.7+ and MariaDB 10.4+, tested against MySQL 8.4, MySQL 9.7, and MariaDB 11.
If the job is 'root'@'127.0.0.1' on Docker, a MariaDB 11 VPS, and one .sqlite fixture, extra protocols do not earn a paid import dialog. Open SQL Server the same afternoon and stay on Beekeeper.
When Beekeeper Studio is the right tool
Stay on Beekeeper when the engine list is the job, when you already like the tabbed UI, or when your org is buying Indie or Professional for JSON view and native backup. SSH can include a bastion (jump) host, keepalive, automatic key pick, a specific key file, or username plus password. That tunnel form is stronger than a single-hop key-or-password field.
Linux, macOS, and Windows share the same Beekeeper feature set. Keep Community if SQL Server, Redshift, or BigQuery must live next to MySQL without a second app. Do not expect Community to restore a .sql dump the way a dedicated import wizard does.
When a dedicated MySQL client covers the same day
A MySQL-first GUI is enough when you open a saved connection, browse tables, run SQL, edit a row, check EXPLAIN, manage indexes, and import a .sql file. TabulaSQL does that without a license prompt. Safe Lock shows the UPDATE or INSERT SQL before a grid write. The command palette is Ctrl/Cmd+P.
SSH tunnels live on the New Connection form (key file or password) for MySQL/MariaDB and PostgreSQL, not SQLite. Saved connections are encrypted on disk, with no account and no telemetry. Export them as a .dbmconn file with a passphrase when you set up a second laptop.
You give up SQL Server, Redis, BigQuery, Beekeeper query folders, and bastion SSH. Recreate connections by hand: host, port, user, password. TablePlus, Sequel Ace, and HeidiSQL remain other options depending on OS and license. TabulaSQL is one free MIT client, not the only one.
License, OS, SSH, and paid gates
| Criterion | Beekeeper Studio Community | TabulaSQL |
|---|---|---|
| License | GPLv3, $0; org-size request | MIT, $0 |
| Paid gates | Multi-table import/export, JSON sidebar, ER, extra engines | None |
| OS | macOS, Windows, Linux | macOS, Windows, Linux |
| Engines | Many (SQL Server, Redis, BigQuery in Community) | MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite |
| SSH tunnel | TCP; key, password, bastion | In-app key or password (not SQLite) |
| SQL dump import | Paid import/export | Free .sql import |
| Account | None for Community SQL | None |
If you already live in Beekeeper tabs and you need a fourth protocol next month, stay. Dump import, ER, and a MySQL user manager without Indie is the dedicated-client case.
Recreate a Beekeeper MySQL connection
- In Beekeeper, open the MySQL or MariaDB connection. Note Host, Port (usually
3306), Default database, User, and whether SSH Tunnel is on. If you used a socket, switch to TCP: TabulaSQL talks to127.0.0.1or the published Docker port, not/tmp/mysql.sock. - Download TabulaSQL from https://tabulasql.com/download and install the build for your OS. On macOS, if Gatekeeper blocks the first launch, right-click the app and choose Open. Windows SmartScreen may warn on an unsigned build.
- Choose New Connection. Pick the MySQL/MariaDB driver. Set host
127.0.0.1, port3306(or your mapped port), username, and password. For a remote server with no public3306, enable SSH: tunnel host, port22, SSH user, and a key file or password. Leave SSH off for a local server. TabulaSQL has no jump host field. If Beekeeper used a bastion, point SSH at that host and set MySQL host to the address seen from the bastion (often127.0.0.1). - Click Test connection. Error 1045 means the MySQL user or host (
'app'@'127.0.0.1'versus'app'@'localhost') does not match. Error 2002 usually means nothing is listening on that TCP port. Create a user for'%@127.0.0.1'if Beekeeper was using a socket. - Open a table in the grid, edit one cell, and turn on Safe Lock. Confirm the UPDATE SQL before it runs. Then right-click a database and import a
.sqlfile if dump restore was the paid Beekeeper step you wanted gone.
Saved connections stay on your machine. Tunnel notes for other clients live in MySQL GUI with SSH tunnel. Feature lists are on /features.
